68. Charter Contracts, Deposits, and Damage: What Actually Protects You

This Is Where Most Operators Get Burned

Many first-time operators rely on:

👉 “understandings” instead of agreements

That works — until something goes wrong.

Why a Written Contract Is Non-Negotiable

A proper contract should define:

• who is in control of the vessel
• scope of the trip
• cancellation terms
• weather policy
• fuel responsibility
• liability limitations

Without this:

👉 everything becomes subjective

Security Deposits — Not Optional

Deposits are there to cover:

• minor damage (scratches, upholstery, gear)
• misuse
• unexpected wear

Minor vs Major Damage

Your contract should distinguish:

Minor:

• cosmetic issues
• small equipment damage

Major:

• structural damage
• grounding
• collision

Why This Matters

Without structure:

• disputes escalate
• money gets withheld incorrectly
• reputations get damaged

Platform Context

Boat owners using BoatnCrew.com should treat contracts as part of standard operations — not optional paperwork.

Final Thought

If it’s not written — it doesn’t exist when it matters.
