163. AIS vs Radar: Understanding Marine Navigation Technology
Modern vessels rely on a combination of electronic navigation tools to maintain situational awareness.
Two commonly discussed systems are:
- Radar
- AIS (Automatic Identification System)
Radar
Radar detects physical objects using radio waves and works even if the other vessel does not have electronics onboard.
Radar helps detect:
- Land masses
- Other vessels
- Weather systems
AIS
AIS transmits vessel identity, position, speed, and course to other vessels and shore stations.
AIS regulations fall under 33 CFR Part 164.

Many charter operators install AIS voluntarily because it improves situational awareness in congested waterways.
